Poikue on menehtynyt - The brood has died

Koko poikue on menehtynyt. Eilen illalla kaksi poikasta vielä liikkui, tänään ei enää yksikään.

Tämä on Pönttökameran 24. vuosi, eikä koskaan aiemmin ole sattunut mitään vastaavaa. On enemmän sääntö kuin poikkeus, että osa poikasista kuolee. Joskus on yhdeksän munan poikueesta päässyt lentokykyisiksi vain kaksi tai kolme, mutta koko poikue on kuollut vain kerran aiemmin ja se johtui siitä, että emo katosi heti kuoriutumisen jälkeen. Silloin poikaset kuolivat nälkään.

Harvemmin on myöskään kuollut useita poikasia saman päivän aikana. 

En keksi muuta syytä kuin joku tauti tai myrkky. Pesän pehmusteena on todennäköisesti koiran karvaa. Jos koiralla on ollut punkkipanta, tai se on saanut Stronghold tms. lloishäätökäsittelyn, näitä tehoaineita on voinut päätyä karvojen mukana pesään ja ne voivat olla myrkyllisiä poikasille, mutta eivät aikuisille linnuille.

Jostain lähiseudun pihalta on voinut pesämateriaalien mukana tulla torjunta-aineita, hyönteismyrkkyjä tms. 

Nämä toki pelkkää arviailua.

Tapaus on sen verran outo, että päätin lähettää koko poikueen Elintarvikevirastoon tukittavaksi. Näitä villieläinnäytteitä ottava mielellään vastaan tutkittavaksi, koska niiden avulla voidaan selvittää luonnon kokonaistilaa ja juuri tämän tyyppiset tapaukset voivat olla hyödyllisiä tutkimuskohteita. Jos ottavat asian tutkittavakseen, lähettävät aikanaan raportin, jossa tutkimustulokset kerrotaan. Jos saan luvan, julkaisen raportin täällä.

The entire brood has perished. Last night, two nestlings were still moving, but today, not a single one is alive.

This is the 24th year of my Nest Box Camera, and nothing like this has ever happened before. It is more the rule than the exception that some of the nestlings die. Sometimes, out of a brood of nine eggs, only two or three reach fledging, but an entire brood has only died once before, and that was because the mother disappeared immediately after hatching. In that case, the nestlings died of starvation.

It is also rare for several nestlings to die on the same day.

I can't think of any other reason than some disease or poison. The nest lining is likely made of dog hair. 

If the dog had a tick collar or received Stronghold or a similar parasitic treatment, these active substances might have ended up in the nest with the hair and could be toxic to the nestlings, but not to the adult birds.

Pesticides, insecticides, or similar substances might have come into the nest with the nesting materials from some nearby yard.

Of course, this is all just speculation.

The case is so unusual that I decided to send the entire brood to the Finnish Food Authority for examination. They are happy to accept wildlife samples for study, as these can help determine the overall state of nature, and cases like this can be useful research subjects. If they decide to investigate, they will eventually send a report detailing the research results. If I get permission, I will publish the report here.

Pesintä epäonnistumassa - Nesting is failing

Eilen kaikki näytti vielä hyvältä ja normaalilta. Tänään poikasia alkoi menehtyä, illalla varmuudella enää kaksi oli elossa. Mitään näkyvää, selvää syytä ei ole. Niille tuotiin ruokaa, mutta eivät tahtoneet syödä, tai sitten tarjotut toukat olivat liian isoja tms. On iso riski sille, että kaksi elossa ollutta eivät selviä, huominen näyttää.

Yesterday everything still looked good and normal. Today the chicks started to die, and by evening only two were definitely still alive. There is no visible, clear reason. They were given food, but they didn't seem to want to eat, or perhaps the larvae offered were too big or something. There is a high risk that the two remaining ones won't survive; tomorrow will tell.

Kaksi poikasta lisää kuoriutui tänään, yksi muna edelleen jäljellä. Jos se ei huomenna kuoriudu, se tuskin enää ehtii muiden poikasten kasvuvauhtiin mukaan.

Two more chicks hatched today, with one egg still remaining. If it doesn't hatch tomorrow, it likely won't be able to keep up with the growth pace of the other chicks.

Emolinnuilla alkaa olla kiirettä ja lentoliikenne tulee lähipäivinä vain lisääntymään. Porttilaskuri näyttää nyt melko hyvin oikein kasvattamalla laskurin lukemaa jokaisesta tulosta ja poistumisesta yhdellä. Jos lintu jää aukolle koputtelemaan tai muuten vaan katselemaan maisemia, tulee yhdestä tulosta tai lähdöstä edelleen enemmän kuin yksi numero lisää laskuriin. Kovin paljon näitä ei nyt näytä kuitenkaan tapahtuvan, joten voimme luottaa laskurin lukemaan, kun siitä vähennetään n. 5%. Tänään illalla laskuri näytti 431, joten n. 400 kertaa on aukosta kuljettu. Koska yksi käynti lisää laskurin lukemaa kahdella, on ruokintakäyntejä ollut n. 200. 

The parent birds are starting to get busy, and air traffic will only increase in the coming days. The gate counter now shows a fairly accurate count, increasing by one for each entry and exit. If a bird stops at the opening to peck or just to enjoy the view, one entry or exit still adds more than one number to the counter. However, this doesn't seem to happen often, so we can trust the counter's reading after subtracting about 5%. This evening, the counter showed 431, so there have been approximately 400 passes through the opening. Since each visit increases the counter by two, there have been around 200 feeding visits.

Neljä poikasta kuoriutui

Neljä poikasta kuoroitui päivän aikana. Ensimmäinen varhain aamuyöllä klo 3:44. Kirjosieppokin kävi monta kertaa häiritsemässä.

Four chicks hatched during the day. The first one early in the morning at 3:44 AM. Even the pied flycatcher came by several times to disturb them.

Päivän toisella videolla nähdään yhden poikasen kuoroituminen. Muut kuoriutuivat emon alla piilossa kameralta, mutta tämä yksi näkyy alusta loppuun.

In the second video of the day, we can see one chick hatching. The others hatched hidden under the mother, out of view of the camera, but this one is visible from start to finish.

Kolme munaa jäi vielä kuoriutumatta. Ne luultavasti kuoriutuvat huomenna.

Three eggs have yet to hatch. They will probably hatch tomorrow.

Tintti suuttui oravalle

Tintti suuttui. Ulkomakerasta ei näkynyt mitään joten ilmeisesti orava kolisteli talon katolla ja se kuullosta uhkaavalta. Muuten haudonta jatkuu normaalisti.

The bird got angry. Nothing could be seen from the outside camera, so apparently a squirrel was making noise on the roof, which sounded threatening. Otherwise, the incubation continues as usual.

Kimalainen eiliseltä

Haudonta jatkuu normaalisti. Kamerakuvan yläreunaan lisätty haudontapäivälaskuri. Talitiainen hautoo 12-15 vuorokautta, joidenkin lähteiden mukaan 12-16 vuorokautta.

Eiliseltä löytyi vielä hauka video kimalaisesta, mikä sai emon pakenemaan pöntöstä.

The incubation continues as normal. An incubation day counter has been added to the top of the camera image. The great tit incubates for 12-15 days, according to some sources 12-16 days.

Yesterday, a funny video of a bumblebee was still found, which made the mother bird flee from the nest.

Haudonta näyttää vihdoin viimein alkaneen, kuusi päivää muninnan lopettamisen jälkeen.

Incubation finally seems to have begun, six days after the end of egg-laying.

Taas tapellaan

Munia on edelleen seitsemän, mutta haudonta ei ole alkanut. Tämä on erikoista eikä aiemmin ole ollut näin pitkää taukoa muninnan lopettamisen haudonnan alkamisen välillä. 

The eggs are still seven, but incubation hasn't started. This is peculiar, as there hasn't been such a long delay between egg laying and the start of incubation before.

Näytti siltä, että toinen talitintti alkoi rakentaa pesää tähän pönttöön. Se tuo rahkasammalta, mitä tavallisesti laitetaan pesän pohjalle. Sitten pesän omistaja saapui paikalla ja tappelu oli valmis. Kumpikin selvisi hengissä, eikä pesäkään todennäköisesti kärsinyt pahoja vaurioita.

It appeared that another great tit began building a nest in this box. It brought in moss typically used for lining the nest floor. Then the rightful owner of the nest arrived, and a fight broke out. Both emerged unscathed, and the nest likely didn't sustain serious damage either. The eggs are well-protected deep inside the nest, so they surely didn't get broken.

Miksi pesän omistaja ei päästä tunkeilijaa pakenemaan, vaan pitää siitä kiinni vielä kun se on jo puoliksi ulkona? Muutenkin se olsi varmasti paennut jo moneen kertaan, jos vaan olisi päässyt. Minusta evoluutio on tehnyt tässä virheen, koska tällainen toiminta ei näytä loogiselta.

Kirjosieppokin kävi, mutta silloin ei ollut ketään kotona.

Why doesn't the owner of the nest let the intruder escape, but instead holds onto it even when it's halfway out? Otherwise, it surely would have fled many times if it had the chance. In my opinion, evolution has made a mistake here because this behavior doesn't seem logical.

A pied flycatcher also visited, but there was no one at home then.

Seitsemän munaa, haudonta ehkä alkamassa

Eilen ei näkynyt munia, koska emo peitti ne heti aamulla lähtiessään. Tänän munia oli seitsemän.

Yesterday, there were no eggs visible because the bird covered them immediately before leaving in the morning. Today, there were seven eggs.

Koska toissapäivänä niitä oli kuusi, on seitsemäs todennäköisesti munittu jo eilen ja tänän ei tullut enää lisää, eivätkä munat olleet tänään peitettynä ollenkaan. Tämä viittaa siihen, että haudonta olisi alkamassa. Munaluku seitsemän on taliaiselle keskimääräistä vähemmän.

Emo oli poissa pöntöstä 11:15 ja 18:52 välisen ajan. Porttilaskuri oli rekisteröinyt keskiyöhön mennessä vain yhdeksän kulkua, joten käyntejä on ollut tänään todella vähän.

Since there were six eggs the day before yesterday, the seventh one is likely to have been laid yesterday, and no more were laid today. Additionally, the eggs were not covered at all today. This suggests that incubation may be beginning soon. Seven eggs is below average for a great tit.

The bird was out of the nest box between 11:15am and 6:52pm. The gate counter had registered only nine passages by midnight, so there have been very few visits today.

The number of eggs couldn't be seen today, but there are likely four now.

The bumblebee visited only a few times, and the pied flycatcher once.

Vaikka sieppo on rasittava näin tiaisen pesinnän näkökulmasta katsottuna, se on kyllä aika kaunis lintu.

Even though the flycatcher can be a nuisance from the perspective of the great tit's nesting, it is indeed a beautiful bird.

Kolmas muna ja kimalainen kiusaa urakalla

Odotetusti kolmas muna ilmestyi pesään tänään. Se näkyi vasta illalla, mutta on kyllä munittu aamuyöllä, ollut koko päivän peitettynä piilossa vihollisilta.

Expectedly, the third egg appeared in the nest today. It was only visible in the evening, but it was indeed laid in the early hours of the morning, remaining hidden from enemies all day.

The bee visited several times again today.

Liiketunnistuksen avulla tallennetuista kuvista koostetaan video automaattisesti tasatunnein kuva-arkistoon ao. päivämään mukaiseen kansioon, josta se on vapaasti katsottavissa. Videos are automatically compiled from images captured using motion detection and stored in the corresponding folder for the respective day, available for viewing at any time (See Linkkejä/Kuva-arkisto). It's easy to determine from the video if there have been any visitors to the nest or if anything unusual has occurred. From today's video, it can be calculated that the bee visited approximately 10 times.

Kimalaisia ja toinen muna

Kimalaiset näyttävät kiusaavan tänä vuonna selvästi enemmän kuin aiemmin. Monta kertaa tänäänkin. Tintti selvästi varoo koskemasta siihen ja on vähän ihmeissään, mitä sille pitäisi tehdä.

The bumblebees seem to be bothering much more this year than before. Several times today as well. Titmouse clearly avoids touching it and is a bit puzzled about what to do with it.

In today's video, the titmouse spends a long time trying to get the bumblebee out. The bumblebee is afraid of the titmouse, and the titmouse is afraid of the bumblebee, which takes a defensive stance with its stinger raised.

Uusia pönttöjä, ensimmäinen muna ja kirjosieppo

Uusia pönttöjä 28 millin aukolla asennettu kaksi kappaletta pihapiiriin. Nuo ovat niille sinitiaisille ja kirjosiepoille, jotka ovat tunkemassa jo asuttuun kamerapönttöön. 

Two new nest boxes with a 28-millimeter entrance hole have been installed in the backyard. These are for the blue tits and European pied flycatchers that are trying to squeeze into the already inhabited camera nest box.

Uusista pöntöistä huolimatta, kirjosieppo kävi taas kamerapöntössä. Tällä kertaa talitiainen ei ollut paikalla.

Despite the new nest boxes, the European pied flycatcher visited the camera box again. This time, the great tit was not present.

Sieppo näyttää yrittävän ulospääsyä pöntön katossa olevan valoikkunan kautta, vaikka se lopulta löytää suoraan aukollekin. Eikö se tajua mistä se on tullut sisään?

The flycatcher seems to be attempting to exit through the light window in the nest box's ceiling, even though it eventually finds the entrance hole directly. Doesn't it understand where it came in from?

Pesän rakentelua ja kimalaisia

Eilisestä nujakasta ei näynä aiheutuneet suurempaa haittaa. Pesän rakentelu jatkui tänään normaalisti pehmusteiden tuonnilla. 

Yesterday's fight didn't seem to cause any significant harm. Nest-building resumed today as usual, with the bringing in of nesting materials.

Iltapäivällä kävi muutama kimalainen pöntössä. Yksi säikäytti tintin, joka katsoi parhaaksi poistua ja seurata tilannetta ulkopuolelta. Kimalainen poistui omin avuin ja tilenna oli ohi.

In the afternoon, a few bumblebees visited the nesting box. One scared the bird, who decided to leave and observe the situation from outside. The bee left on its own and the situation was resolved.
